Build Your Defense Before It's Needed
Part 1 of a seven-part series on chargebacks: real chargeback prevention starts before anything happens

Most merchants think about chargebacks after they happen. The real leverage is in what you do before. This is the first post in a seven-part series covering chargeback prevention, descriptors, customer care, preparation, managing an active dispute, friendly fraud, and the tools worth knowing about.
3DS2 Authentication Shifts Liability Away From You
When properly completed, 3DS2 moves fraud liability for card-not-present transactions off the merchant. The full mechanics and setup checklist were covered in an earlier series, but for any merchant who hasn't implemented it yet, this remains the single highest-leverage chargeback prevention tool available.
AVS And CVV Matching Catches Problems Before They're Problems
Address and card verification checks are basic, but skipping or ignoring partial matches is one of the most common preventable causes of fraud-related disputes. These checks exist specifically to flag mismatches before a transaction ever completes.
Order Confirmation, Every Time
A clear receipt applies to every sale, digital or physical. If a business ships a physical good, tracking and signed delivery confirmation add a second layer of evidence on top of that receipt, exact documentation that's already available if a product-not-received dispute shows up later.
A Clear Refund Policy Removes A Reason To Dispute
If a customer doesn't know how to get a refund, or assumes it isn't possible, disputing with their bank becomes the path of least resistance. Stating the policy clearly, and making it easy to find, removes that default option before it's ever considered.
The Takeaway
Which of these chargeback prevention levers have you actually implemented, and which have you been putting off? The rest of this series will cover what happens once prevention isn't enough, preparation, active dispute management, and the tools built specifically for merchants who deal with this routinely.
