The Customer Paid. Less Landed In Your Account.

Where the hidden FX markup on your sales actually comes from

You made the sale. The customer paid. Then the number that actually lands in your account is smaller than you expected. Here's where that gap comes from.

Where Your Money Actually Settles

Many merchants assume they'll be paid in their home currency by default. Without asking, settlement often defaults to USD, meaning every payout gets converted whether the merchant wanted it to or not. Knowing your settlement currency options upfront can prevent an unwanted conversion on every single transaction.

The Markup Nobody Quotes You Upfront

Processors rarely convert at the interbank rate. A margin gets added on top, often two to four percent, quietly baked into the settlement rather than itemized as a separate fee. Because it's built into the rate rather than shown as a line item, most merchants never realize how much they're actually paying.

Local Acquiring vs. Cross-Border Acquiring

Routing transactions through a local acquirer in the customer's country can avoid cross-border fees entirely. Most merchants never realize this option exists, or that they're being routed the more expensive way by default simply because no one asked about the alternative.

The Gap Between A Sale And A Payout

Revenue booked in one currency and paid out days later in another creates exposure to rate movement in between. This swing is invisible until you actually reconcile your books and notice the numbers don't quite match what you expected.

The Takeaway

Do you actually know the FX margin your processor is charging you? Most merchants don't, simply because it's never itemized anywhere they'd naturally look. Asking the direct question, and comparing it against alternatives, is often the fastest way to recover margin that's quietly disappearing on every international sale.
